It looks like during the year of 2012, our study abroad tours in Mexico might have some company. Travel blogs are forecasting that this year, Mexico will see a surge of visitors thanks to the Mayan region. Mexican officials have even predicted a 10 percent increase in tourism to the country. And why? We’ll, it’s all about this little calendar and the Mayans – and supposedly some end-of-the-world talk. The truth is that the Mayan calendar depicts a cycle. Some call the new cycle that will begin this year “the age of Aquarius” when peace will reign. This is why many metaphysicists, spiritual leaders, shamans say that the “end” of the Mayan calendar is simply a shift from one cycle to another-offering
an opportunity for a deeper alignment with God.
The 2012 Predictions
There are many conspiracies and theories circulating about 2012 signifying the end of the world according to the Mayan calendar. And while people will argue on the nature of the Mayans, the involvement of the Apocalypse, or even some sort of spiritual transformation that’s predicted to occur, one thing is sure – the Maya Long Count calendar ends on December 21, 2012 – the winter solstice. This date concludes a 5,125-year period of time, and has many experts going nuts over its significance. And there are a lot of people who want to see the land that these predictions are coming from.
The Mayan Region
The Mayan region of Mexico consists of several states in the southern region. Larger countries like Belize are already preparing through increased airline travel and lodging, as well as some of the smaller areas like Tabasco and Tapachula are planning to host street fairs, Mayan cultural events and more. It’s an important time where the world will be watching the center of the Mayan universe, in speculation of the accuracy and truth to a long-time calendar running out and connection to the end of the world.
